The School of Foundation and Preparatory Studies (SFPS) initiates one’s learning at Srishti. SFPS envisions on building the foundation for an individual’s future learning in the Undergraduate Professional Program, and prepare students coming in from various undergraduate discipline, and enable them to pursue their Postgraduate studies at Srishti.

From several years of experience, the school hosts an action and reflection space that is renowned for its openness and playfulness. Here, the students begin to understand the self in relation to the society and the world at large in order to build an art and design practice that is meaningful. The School inculcates essential life skills that become the foundation of the students’ creative practice irrespective of the media they choose.

The School nurtures the space to integrate the core values of creative practice:
Concept (Idea and Ideology)
Craft (Aesthetics and Industry)
Community (Social Relevance and Integration).

The School was created to build creative and cognitive capabilities, dispositions and hybrid, non-linear literacies in the students. For several years, the school has been successfully practicing ‘Unlearning’ having woven it seamlessly into the fabric of its pedagogy. ‘Unlearning’ is the reconstitution of what one has already learned, building a critical and creative disposition that is able to imagine and express, make and build, see, think and wonder. Learning at the School of Foundation and Preparatory Studies is contextual, and an emphasis is placed on the community as much as it is on the individual. The students begin to use tools for thinking, see patterns where they used to see objects, engage with practice and learn ways to reflect. Through studios and workshops in Art and Design practices, students begin to develop habits, that enable them to engage with the practice of creative making.

SFPS gives primacy to context and emphasizes on contextual learning as opposed to isolated skill building. SFPS situates the following set of values into its curriculum:

  • Active – Learning by engaging with ideas and getting involved with the communities in that particular context, thereby placing body over mind.
  • Experiential – Learning by making, exploring and experiencing materials, forms and patterns.
  • Reflective – Learning by observing and unlearning practices across the timeline of study.
  • The School offers modules that helps students explore all aspects of creative expression and discover what sustains their interest.

Schools and Disciplines

Foundation Studies:

At the level of Foundation Studies, learners not bound by disciplines: The practice of learning is designed to explode beyond the disciplinary boundaries so as to mobilize the mind and the body; touching the roots of intuition and imagination that have been buried underneath.

The students maintain a continuous engagement with Craft , one of the core values of the school, which gives them the ability to visualize, construct or understand the cultural and cognitive aspects of perception such as metaphors, symbols, myths or icons.

Preparatory Studies:

Unlike the foundation studies – which serves as the entry level for the Undergraduate Program at Srishti – the PGDP under the Preparatory Studies wades into several disciplines so as to inform and bridge learning with practice.
Further, the disciplines are chosen and practiced in accord with the three pathways that PGDP offers:

  • Bridge, for learners to connect and leap into the art and design world.
  • Finish Pathway, to extend and establish art and design skills
  • Apprenticeship, to enrich art and design learning by practicing and implementing.

Learning Approach

What triggers imagination at the School of Foundation and Preparatory Studies?

The programs under this school are envisioned to broaden the understanding of art and design practice through unlearning. The process helps student reflect on their training so far, break down convictions and reorient themselves for discovery.

The Foundation Studies, is for those individuals who come after twelfth standard education, and acts as a platform for the UG professional program at Srishti. The learning experiences are designed in such a way that a student from any curriculum ( CBSE, IGCSE, ICSE, NIOS and State School Boards) can explore different ways of learning.

The Preparatory Studies’ Postgraduate Diploma Programs (PGDP) has been crafted for those individuals who join us with an undergraduate degree and feel a need to develop their art and design skills. At the PGDP, an individual will not be limited by the baggage of their previous education.
The PGDP further allows the individual to choose among three pathways, each of which have been designed to suit for different levels of learning.

The Foundation Studies Program does not offer any awards; however, the students who successfully finish the foundation studies program go on to continue the Undergraduate Professional Program.
