‘Tales of Malabar’

‘Tales of Malabar’ attempts to revisit the culture and heritage of the vibrant Mappila community, the largest muslim group in Kerala. The aim of the project was to map and tell the story of the Mappilas and the eclectic culture of the Malabar coast.

In the course of two field trips, students got a chance to really soak in the Mappila culture, through observation of their daily rituals and interactions. They were able to document the Mappila lifestyle and obtain visual references of attire, jewellery, rituals, cuisine, performing arts, trade commodities and folktales. Back in the studio, students went about translating these stories into exhibits and multi-sensory installations in a variety of mediums such as textiles, illustrations and sculptures.

This project was funded by the Dutch Consulate General, New Delhi.
