The Sound Recording and Design pathway gives students an opportunity to engage with sound for the moving image from multiple perspectives – technically, practically and creatively. The need for sound to assert itself as a valid expressive tool to tell stories and not just be subservient to the visual will drive this pathway. Emphasis is placed on location sound recording, postproduction sound and sound design. The theoretical aspect of sound is embedded to the practice of sound recording and design through various exercises and real world projects based both in locations and the studio.
What you will learn
In year 1 you will develop a holistic understanding of the larger filmic production process and be able to appreciate the different elements that constitute a filmic work. You will learn to apply various technical and creative elements of film practice at an introductory level across the domains of direction, cinematography, sound, editing, screenplay writing and production.
In year 2 you will learn to record and design sound as a narrative tool to tell a story. Apply the various interrelationships between sound and image to create meaning. Explore the relationship between effects, voice, music and silence and learn to choose appropriate sound recording equipment, tools and techniques to realize a sound design.
In year 3 you will consolidate your understanding of key sound recording & design tools/ techniques by working in real world projects. You will also learn to work independently on a range of media projects.
