MA in Design Practices

“Professional Design practice is more of an art than a science. In much of their daily work, designers are not grappling with well-formed problems but messy, indeterminate situations”
- Donald Schön (1987) in Educating the Reflective Practitioner

Vision

Design Practices at Srishti is about the thoughtful navigation of complex challenges with a bias towards the development of solutions. The approach engages both critical and creative thinking at the cross sections of theories and proven principles, individual’s experiential perspectives, and idealistic goals. We envisage this course to develop a creative individual practitioner who thrives as a proactive change and impact maker, has a transferable portfolio of capabilities that can enable effective practice in the wide range of circumstances.

Design Practice provides the art and design thinking acumen for learners to engage with the complexities of business and alternate economies. Rather than just acquiring skill or proficiency through the knowledge of the rules, methods and processes to create work products, this program requires students to go beyond and systematically discover and sustain their specialized discipline. Through critical epistemological analysis, the students decide whether to adopt an existing practice framework, leverage from different disciplines or propose one of their own. In each specialization, students are expected to take on formal exploration of varied areas of interest. At Srishti, M.A in Design Practices develops practice based thinking in the students, allowing them to find some new aspect of an area of interest within a practice that extends their knowledge, creating a mindset that encourages them to explore ways of analyzing their work to learn as much as possible about their solutions. Through the studio habits of the mind, this course pushes the students to capture their experience—formally or informally and make their discoveries actionable.
