Design Computation

Position: Faculty - Full time

The M.Des. in Design Computation and the B.Des. Program in Creative Computing inquires into ways in which computational thinking and tools, processes and theories are applied into creative solutions and responses to challenging design problems of the 21st century.

Knowledge and skills to be taught

We are looking for creative transdisciplinary thinkers and practitioners who have a passion for applied science and technology with interest ranging from scientific computing, electronics, data visualization, product design, gaming, networked web based virtual environments, creative coding, hacking, digital fabrication, electronic music and media art.

We are looking for transdisciplinary and creative thinkers and makers who have a background in the computer sciences, electronics, pure science (mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry), interaction design and are interested in exploring their creative potential as researchers, developers and teachers, beyond the confined expectations of a corporate environment or traditional laboratory.

Applicants could be from a spectrum of backgrounds and interests - research, interest in cutting edge technologies, solution and product development, expertise in the current generation of deployable solutions, solution architecture for creative industries, theory and implementation of solutions involving machine learning, natural language processing and other AI related techniques to name some.

- Representing the Mathematics of Fractals, Fluid Dynamics, Generative Art and Creative coding skills using Open Source platforms and libraries like OpenFrameworks (C++) /Processing (Java) / Max MSP/ PureData / Hardware Interfacing and Sensors (Arduino and other variants), Video mapping and projection transformation using 3D range scanners like the Kinect, GPU programming using CUDA

Design Led Innovation

Position: Faculty - Full time

Srishti is recruiting individuals who have strong understanding and skills in Design Led Innovation and / or Business Service Systems Design in teaching/education at the post secondary level (undergraduate and graduate) to develop and deliver a curriculum built around this developing field.

The vision of this program is to create innovators who will explore and apply the understanding of human behavior, context, business strategy and technology towards the creation of innovative and sustainable products and services with the potential to drive positive change individually as well as at a larger social level. At Srishti, we think of Design Led Innovation not just as “Design Driven” in its traditional sense, but more about “designing for emerging usages and technologies” to project and foresee what can be. We take the best practices from several disciplines and we promote creative art & design thinking grounded in humanities to push the boundaries of both the technological and business aspects of innovation. This curriculum is delivered using innovative design pedagogy with most courses structured and delivered around the idea of "teach by doing". Students often work in live contexts and faculty engage more in the facilitative and learning role.

The position we are recruiting will deliver courses for our students across the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, in the area of Design Led Innovation and Experience Design. Students will be expected to use tools and understanding gained through these courses to inform their own design practice.

Digital Humanities

Position: Faculty - Full time

The Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology is launching an MA in Digital Humanities in 2016, the first of its kind in India, and one of the few institutions worldwide to offer this degree in a design school environment.

Furniture and Woodcraft Design

Position: Faculty - Full time

Srishti invites applications for the position of Furniture Design Faculty.

We are looking for designers with a hands-on and adaptive approach to teach both undergraduate and postgraduate students at Srishti in our Bangalore campus. We seek applications from practitioners who are creative and passionate, who have a good understanding of current manufacturing processes, contemporary materials used in furniture industry as well as traditional practices. The right candidate will have a hands-on approach to teaching and will be able to direct students through prototyping in the workshop.

We are looking for designers with a furniture, craft and or design entrepreneurship background whose interests necessarily intersect business, design and production, for fulltime teaching.

Knowledge and skills to be taught

The Creative Manufacturing course prepares students to work in the Micro, small and medium scale enterprises or set up their own enterprises to leverage the traditional craft and creative skills in India in furniture, décor and toys utilizing wood and allied materials.

Today in India while there is a tilt in investment in capital and technology heavy areas like aerospace, defense, biotech and electronics hardware, they offer negligent numbers in employment. On the other hand India has an opportunity to capture the global demand for hand made creative industry products at the premium, luxury and everyday segments that have the potential of gainfully employing thousands of the millions of traditional artisans in modern, labor and environmentally compliant manufacturing units.
The market is fiercely competitive and requires best in class methods for design, production and technology adaptation. The sector requires quick design refresh and needs to employ agile methodologies like those used in soft ware industry to crash development time without compromising on innovation or quality.

Expectations of the position

A Masters Degree with 3-5 years of work experience or a Bachelors degree with 5-10 years of work experience in furniture design, product design or craft design with experience in having designed furniture, furniture and décor or furniture and toys. Experience of having designed furniture is a must.
Experience of having handled and managed multidisciplinary teams on projects or in a business is a must. Experience of having seen several products through production is a must.

Skills

  • Be familiar and have used computer aided design tools,

Knowledge and skills to be taught

We are looking for people who can teach across the undergraduate and postgraduate program. If you have experience working in Industry or have teaching experience, with a background in Industrial design (Textile, Product or Furniture Design) and have good skills in facilitation, you are the right person for the job. People who have worked in the Craft sector are welcome. The focus is on design and art thinking skills, materials and processes, research methods and creative making, with an interest in the future of design. It would be a bonus if you had some understanding and interest in the larger issues of sustainability, green production, product lifecycles or any other related issues. All the learning units have elements of hands-on making and so some skills in this area are a key requirement.

You will need to be open to teach collaboratively with creative professionals from other disciplines and construct learning units that deliver skills of thinking and making while provoking curiosity and engagement with real world issues. It is important to be able to work with students and colleagues in a facilitative manner.

Information Arts and Information Design Practices

Position: Faculty - Full time

Srishti Institute Of Art, Design And Technology invites applications from experienced, driven and passionate teachers/practitioners for our BDes and MDes programs in Information Arts And Information Design Practices (IAIDP)

The B.Des. and M.Des. Programs in Information Arts and Information Design Practices use narrative, storytelling and communication as key frames to interpret the world. In these two programs we explore the idea that all data is narrative. Information is narrative, but with purposefulness. Access to information is making the physical boundaries of the world we live in permeable. With multiple screens, constant connectivity, social and mass media has taken on a completely new form. The narrative has become all-pervasive, whether it be complex data that is to be effectively disseminated to diverse audiences, using diverse media, or it be used as a tool for research with communities in flux.

We bring into play Multimodal Design, Narrative, Graphic Design, Computer Graphics, Interaction Design, Interactive Virtual Environments and emerging technologies in a networked society to address challenges in design, art and information sciences.
From a knowledge-based society, the challenge is to move to a wisdom-based society. To this end, we seek to find ways to seamlessly draw from the essence and spirit of the jester, the bard and the wandering minstrels in our modern guises.

Expectations of the position

Position One: We are looking at practising professionals/educators with core area experience of at least 5 years in Visual Design, Graphic Design, Webware & Software Interactions and Interfaces, primary experience in design and practice in the field of information organisation and architecture, information collection, analysis, taxonomy and hierarchy, navigation design. An inclination to storytelling in its multiple forms and some experience in education would be important as well.

Position Two: We invite professional storytellers (both visual and oral) with an awareness and practice in traditional storytelling methods like puppetry, dastangoi, villupaatu, kaavad and other dance and theatre forms experimenting with creative narratives, community based narratives, environment and sustainability or digital narratives.

Position Three: We welcome people who bring in philosophical inquiry using art and design as tools of critical investigation. People whose work is informed by and seeped in introspection and reflection, along with knowledge in particular philosophical systems of thought and a practical application in art or design practices. People who see craftsmanship as one part storytelling, one part activism and one part introspection and reflection.

Position Four:

We welcome people with a passion for information science , information arts and it's overlap in arts, science and technology, interactive multimodal web interfaces, data visualization & data science and possessing skills in any of the below listed domains to fill in multiple available positions:
- Designing navigable information interfaces for interactive virtual environments and screen based applications , UX/UI design, Wireframing for web and mobile based interfaces and applications.

Interaction & Interface Engineering

About the curriculum:

The vision of this program is to create designers who will be able to design and develop user interfaces and interaction designs for products and services that enhance the overall user experience. The 3-year undergraduate program in Interface & Interaction Engineering focuses on training students to develop exceptional skills to craft high-quality, professional interface designs. Grounded in the human centered design principles, this program leverages an approach that optimizes the interface around how users can, want, or may use the product, rather than forcing the users to change their behavior to accommodate the product. The program will focus on the tools, standards, frameworks and methods of creating, documenting, and communicating interface design across web, mobile, and large screen platforms. The studios will be more applied, where the students will learn through applying the concepts in concrete design situations under the mentorship of studio leads. The overall curriculum covers an iterative process of designing interactive computing applications including desktop/laptop software, and smart-phone/tablet apps.

Knowledge and skills to be taught

The position we are recruiting will coordinate with our extensive industry UX partners in delivering this style of courses for our undergraduate program in the area of user interface and interaction engineering. Candidates whose creative work and teaching combine a robust array of the following will be given preference: user interface and interaction design, HCI, or comparable discipline, with experience teaching interaction design and development for multiple device types and contexts; ability to prepare students for career opportunities in the field; and extensive knowledge of current professional practices in interaction design.

Screen Studies at Srishti offers an innovative M.A. program fully integrating the study of history, criticism, and theory of film and related media alongside hands on engagement with screen based technologies in an art and design framework of learning and practice.

We are seeking educators with a track record of practice based and creative engagement with screen media in the context of contemporary digital culture.

Professionals with an art or design practice, or, post-graduate education related to screen media-such as video, television, photography, virtual reality and gaming, interactive storytelling, image processing and computer vision-are invited to apply for the above position. We especially welcome candidates with a level of digital literacy that extends beyond one specific area of expertise, and who are conversant with the intersections between digital technologies and cultures, and earlier screen traditions. Textile and Fashion Design

Position: Faculty - Full time

Srishti is recruiting educators who have a strong professional and academic background in Textile Design. This position is for Srishti’s Undergraduate as well as Postgraduate Program in Textile Design in Industrial Arts and Design Practices.

The 4-year Undergraduate Professional Program is committed to training students in the various fields of art and design with a focus on cross-disciplinary education. The program exposes students to an exploratory and creative learning process with a focus on hands-on experiential learning.

The 2-year Postgraduate Program in Industrial Arts and Design practices, with a focus in Textile Design is meant for practitioners who want to grow, develop and extend their practice and fresh graduates who are seeking to add a professional, practical and creative dimension to their existing degrees or qualifications.

As a faculty member in this program, you will be responsible for developing course content, as well as for delivery of courses across both the undergraduate as well as postgraduate programs in Industrial Arts and Design Practices.

Knowledge and skills to be taught would include:

Weaving: Basic and advanced level weaving

Block and Screen Printing: Fluency and hands on exploratory approach to Block and Screen-printing methods, Repeat methods

Experimental approach in classroom allowing creative ways of expression

Dyeing Fluency in natural and chemical dyeing methods

Fibre art, mixed media and Textile art: Working with fibres to using techniques other than weaving. Fluency to work with different media and materials to create three-dimensional structures

The person we are looking for will have a clear understanding of this field and will be a motivated educator. There is also scope to work with the head of program and other faculty members to co-develop courses, as well as projects, thus adding value to the textile design and fashion design curriculum. Other responsibilities will include assessments, end-of-the-semester reviews and being part of jury panels for students’ projects and course works.

  • Masters-level design education or higher from a leading institute in textile design, textile/ fibre arts, fine arts with print making background, fashion design/ apparel design, clothing and garment manufacturing

About the curriculum:

The vision of this program is to create designers who will empathetically explore and apply understanding of human behavior, context, and technology towards creation of digital products and services that enhance the users lives. Human Centered Design is about keeping focus on “people” while creating products and services. It is about creating rich user experiences that aim at solving existing problems, creating delight for people and making products and services usable and useful. At Srishti Human Centered Design concentrates on Interaction Design and User Experience Design. We think about human-centered design as not just “user-driven” in its traditional sense, but more about “designing for emerging usages”. We foster a combination of creative Art & Design thinking, along with critical thinking of the Humanities to explore a human-centered design that not only produces great digital solutions, but also critically questions and explores future ways of interacting with digital technology and their implications. Our current curriculum is developed around the traditional skills of design in classic areas of design, product & interface, furniture, textile, visual communication, film, animation, interior and space just to name a few. These courses are structured around leading edge design pedagogy where most courses are delivered around a project that is used to "teach by doing".

Knowledge and skills to be taught

The position we are recruiting will develop and deliver this style of courses for our undergraduate and graduate program in the area of user experience and interaction design. Candidates whose research, creative work and teaching combine a robust array of the following will be given preference: user experience and interaction design, HCI, or comparable discipline, with experience teaching interaction design for multiple device types and contexts; ability to prepare students for career opportunities in the field; solid background in design theory and history and interaction design research; and extensive knowledge of current and emerging professional practices in interaction design.

Expectations of the position

  • M.Des or equivalent required, Ph.D. preferred
  • University-level teaching experience beyond undergraduate-student teaching

Position: Full time position for AV TECHNICAL SUPPORT and EQUIPMENT MANAGEMENT

Expectations of the position

Professionals with experience of AV technologies / equipment handling / equipment knowledge / relevant industry are invited to apply for the above position. Your responsibility will be manage and maintain equipment that is required for the teaching of film, animation, visual effects and game design. These include computers, projectors, sound equipment, digital video cameras and accessories, etc. A good knowledge of electronic equipment of this nature with an ability to supervise or undertake technical maintenance and repair will be an added bonus.
