It is a two-year, full-time, programme designed for art professionals, artists, gallerists, theorists and aspiring curators to develop professional and academic excellence in the field of curating. As a student, you are encouraged to curate projects and connect with a national and international network of peers and collaborators for your work. The programme is founded on the premise that there is no separation between practice and theory in curatorial work, and that as curator you will operate across a vast ecology of contexts and spaces—from the museum, to the commercial gallery, to the artist-led space, to the festival, to a lab, to new creative ventures. Therefore, you will acquire the criticality, skills and flexibility to work in the ever-changing contexts of the contemporary art world and cultural production, and you will have a strong awareness and understanding of international and national socio-cultural and political discourses in the field.

While offering an international perspective on curating, the role of the curator and exhibition-making, the programme includes an in-depth exploration of the South Asian and South East Asian contexts. Your tutors and mentors will comprise national and international art professionals, operating in the field of visual arts, video&film, public art, and art&technology, so that you will be exposed to a set of local practices that will allow you to evolve a mode of work that learns from the local scenario as much as the global. Srishti offers inquiry-based learning rooted in art, design and technology, and this will offer you an interdisciplinary approach to curatorial practice.

Bangalore has a thriving art scene, well-known for the variety of art spaces and approaches to curating art, film and media. The cultural life of the city is shaped by the activities of various artist-run spaces, residency programmes for artists, writers and designers, independent film and dance festivals, commercial galleries, and sound&music organisations. Bangalore also has a long and established history of research organisations dedicated to the sciences, and a number of organisations working in the fields of urban studies, digital culture, law and social activism. The variety of the local cultural, artistic and research ecosystem will offer you the opportunity to develop an interdisciplinary practice, and enrich your interests and research outside the boundaries of contemporary art history.

You will be encouraged to build upon your existing research interests and practices across disciplinary borders—from art, to design, to humanities, to media studies, to the sciences, to anthropology. You will explore the work of mediating between artworks/artifacts/narratives and an audience across thematic studios which will provide you with the skills, theoretical frameworks, criticality and field work experience that you can apply to your own existing education and work. Through this, you will develop a context-specific, sustainable and professional curatorial practice, while benefiting from learning from the activities of the research centres, projects and labs already housed at Srishti Institute, such as Art in Transit, ArtScience Bangalore, the Center for Education, Research, Training, and Development (CERTAD) and the Center for Experimental Media and Arts (CEMA).

The programme adopts the methodology of fine art practice and supports the development of an independent practice and research. It will offer you a combination of studios, taught seminars and workshops, along with the opportunity to produce curatorial projects, individually or in group, while being mentored. The programme will also include talks with professionals in the art and cultural sectors and site visits, and you will benefit from the connections you will establish with artists, curators, gallerists and creative entrepreneurs. At the end of the 2-year programme you will produce a dissertation and a final curatorial project.

We seek motivated candidates who are excited about experimenting, innovating and discovering their own voice and personal expression. Beside catering to art professionals, artists and critics, the programme is open to candidates with backgrounds from diverse disciplines (from writing, to journalism, to anthropology, to humanities, to education, to social sciences) as long as you can demonstrate a strong interest and basic understanding of curatorial practices and exhibition-making. You will gain the skills, theoretical frameworks, criticality and practical experience to:

  • Work in museums, galleries, and arts organisations;
  • Work as independent curators. For example, organising exhibition and cultural programmes for museums, galleries, and festivals, in fields spanning contemporary art, performance, new media, film&video, sound art&music; and/or developing independent curatorial research projects;
  • Initiate creative ventures in the arts and cultural sector, such biennales and art fairs;
  • Work in publishing and with writing (e.g. grant writing, and creative and academic writing)
  • Work in arts management and project development
  • Further your research and undertake advanced study

If you are already a practising art professionals you will be able to deepen and broaden your knowledge of curating and its contexts, to acquire further critical and practical tools, and create your own network of peers and collaborators to develop a more sustainable, context-specific and professional practice.

In response to the heterogeneity of the ecology of contexts and spaces in which curating occurs and the multiform nature of the figure of the curator, this programme offers an interdisciplinary approach to curatorial practice that is rooted in the art, design and technology context of Srishti. While offering an international perspective on curating, the role of the curator and exhibition-making, the programme includes an in-depth exploration of the South Asian and South East Asian contexts, encouraging students to focus on local sets of practices, to evolve a method and practice that learns from, transforms and contributes to the local scenario as much as the global.

The specialisation in Curatorial Practices offers a mode of learning that caters to working professionals. Students will attend two 2-week long onsite Intensives per semester, each of which will be followed by 5-week fieldwork, which can be incorporated into the existing professions and practice of artists, curators, and museum, gallery, art organization professionals. Fieldwork will be based on assignments and will be monitored by mentors, in person and remotely when needed. Students will also be able to attend courses offered by other schools at Srishti, such as General Studies (Electives). The Studio-based intensives will include a combination of lecture-based sessions, seminars, workshops, group critiques, guest talks and site visits. With the final capstone project in the 4th semester students will conceptualize, develop and present a curatorial project based on the learning acquired during the previous semesters, their own research interests and curatorial focus.
