LOCATIVE GAMING 2008

Srishti students interested in Game Design began looking at locative games and interactive media as a way of exploring and discovering historical sites.

The idea for the project came during Srishti's 2008 interim semester trip to Kutch, Gujarat, to the Indus Valley site of Dholavira, sparking the possibility of using locative games to explore the space. The local tour guides at the site have worked there since excavation began in 1991. Their knowledge of the site is very tactile, having been involved in the excavation of the site, sorting artifacts and piecing together this information with data from presentations made by visiting professors and archaeologists. The local culture of the village of Dholavira is also rich with stories about astronomy, and the dig and excavation itself.

The project envisions building a technology platform for the local tour guides to collate and share their own knowledge and experience of the site, as well as for them to develop locative games for use in their tours.
